We are seeking a Research Associate to take a key role in the design and development of digital hydraulic fluid power technologies and control systems. This role is funded by the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, investigating Digital Hydraulic Fluid Power Technologies for Decarbonising Off-road Vehicles.

Hydraulic fluid power has several advantages, such as high power density, compactness, low weight, fast response, and good controllability. However, the current hydraulic control method involves using valves to throttle flow, reduce pressure, and control the speed and force of the load. Although this approach is simple to operate, it is highly energy inefficient, and the average power efficiency of fluid power systems is only about 21%.

This project aims to design, develop and prototype next-generation digital hydraulic technologies and control systems to significantly improve hydraulic energy efficiency, fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions to decarbonise off-road vehicles for a sustainable and greener future. In addition, there are also opportunities to conduct interdisciplinary research on highly efficient actuation mechanisms, collaborating with colleagues nationally and internationally.

成人网站 you

You will be responsible for delivering high-quality research on the topic, including:

 • Design and modelling of digital hydraulic fluid power technologies
 • Prototyping, validating and evaluating digital hydraulic converters
 • Digital fluid power system integration and experimental validations
 • Stimulating and creating pathways to impact and disseminate the research outcomes and promote the exploitation of the new technologies

This position is an EPSRC funded collaboration led by 成人网站 and has 8 industrial partners, including battery manufacturers, recyclers, material suppliers and equipment producers. The focus of this is to investigate thermal recycling methods for functional coatings and develop wavelength sensitive adhesives which will ‘unglue’ when subject to certain types of radiation.

 • This specific role is to lead research into impacts of different thermal methods on degrading adhesives to aid recycling.
 • While experience with adhesives is not necessary, this role would suit someone with a good track record in research from a Physics / Chemistry or Mechanical/Chemical/Materials Engineering background.
 • This role will integrate into a team that bridges across all the subjects listed above and the research focus can be directed (within reason) based on the successful applicant’s background. Applicants would work on either item 5a or 5b dependent on their skill set.

Key aspects of the role include:

 1. To undertake research into the potential of NIR radiation and intense pulsed light (IPL) as methods to degrade commercial adhesives to aid debonding within a recycling process.
 2. To benchmark processes against other commercial ‘debondable adhesives’
 3. To adjust commercial adhesives formulation to include absorbing particles to enhance energy adsorption at specific wavelengths. Assessing impacts to bond strength by the incorporation of particles.
 4. Manage the validation of a new Near Infra red (NIR) machine in Bath –

5a. Materials characterisation (microscopy/XPS/DSC) to understand chemical impact of thermal processing.

5b. Develop a heat transfer model based on processing and materials absorption characteristics of the adhesives to aid further research.

<![CDATA[Research Associate in LCA/MFA of Regional Petrochemical Systems (KK12684)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=KK12684 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=KK12684 This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated postdoctoral researcher, with an interest in working at the interface of industrial ecology and chemical engineering to support the decarbonisation of the petrochemical industry, to join our team at the Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change. This project aims to understand how future changes in demand for polymers, chemicals and transport fuels interact with changes in petrochemical production systems, and under which conditions the most significant reductions in life-cycle GHG emissions can be achieved. You will be playing a key role in the global effort to deliver Net Zero.

成人网站 the role

In this research position, you will play a key role in developing an integrated, regional-scale, whole-system model of the petrochemical system, from feedstocks through to polymer production and end-of-life treatment. Specifically, You will:

 • Build on models of the petrochemical system at global scale, previously developed 成人网站, to create regional Material Flow Analysis (MFA) / Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) models of current production routes and their emissions.
 • Work with other members of the research team (based at the University of Sheffield) to integrate their process modelling and production data analysis into the regionalised model to represent current operation and emissions.
 • Again working with the wider project research team, model future scenarios and changes in demand and in process characteristics and production routes, and their effect on emissions.

The role is advertised at Grade 7, but a lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. In this case, applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

This research project is an industry collaboration jointly with the University of Sheffield.

 • Good organisational and presentation skills.
 • The ability to work well in an interdisciplinary environment, with academic and industrial partners.

Ideally, you will have knowledge of chemical engineering and/or polymers and related products and systems — or, perhaps you have instead a strong ability for interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers in chemical engineering, and a willingness to learn.

In our group, we work with Python, version control, and similar tools for developing and sharing research code and models. If you like working in this way, that's great, but also many are new to this, and we'll support you to learn as appropriate.
